Overview
The goal of Project M.A.S. is to help pregnant or
parenting adolescents who are on school maternity
leave return to school current in their course work
and equipped with the essential tools to be the best
parent for their children.
Criteria
We accept teen mothers who are homebound due to prenatal
complications or who have recently delivered their
child. Our area of service is the San Antonio School
District. Student's must be referred by the Pregnancy
related Service Personnel (PRS), usually the high
school parenting teacher, teen parent social worker
or counselor.
Our
Homebound Program
While students are on six-weeks maternity leave, the
school district requires they obtain four contact
hours per week of school instruction to receive a
week's worth of perfect school attendance. Contact
hours are completed at our office or through home
visits if students are having prenatal/postnatal complications.
During
these four hours of weekly contact, our certified
teachers provide students with instructional assistance
on homework assigned by their parent school classroom
teachers. Project MAS is responsible for picking up
and turning in the student's homework assignments;
students are responsible for completing all of their
schoolwork. Transportation to and from our office
along with childcare is provided during the time students
are receiving instructional assistance. These services
help increase the return to school rate for adolescent
mothers after a pregnancy and increase the likely
hood of a successful high school graduation.
To assist in the transition of returning back to school
as an adolescent parent, students and their partners
are encouraged to work with the Project M.A.S. social
worker. She is available throughout the day and by
appointment to help assist with family needs including
but not limited to medical needs (mother and infant),
educational planning, childcare, basic needs and transitional
concerns. The social worker visits the student's home
to talk to students and their family about services.
After students leave Project M.A.S., the social worker
will remain in contact with the students to assist
them with any needs or crisis that may develop throughout
your high school career. The social worker will meet
with students for "update sessions" and students are
encouraged to call the program to give updates and
ask for assistance if needed.
HealthCare
To improve the health of babies born to adolescent
parents, Project M.A.S. offers students the opportunity
to schedule health visits for themselves and for their
children. Coordination of health visits by the Project
MAS social worker through our collaborative partner
- Centro Med Health Clinic - will ensure timely appointment
completion. Transportation will be provided to and
from the health clinic visit.
Support
Groups
Students
will have the opportunity to attend support groups
in the evening after Homebound sessions have terminated.
Methodist Healthcare Ministries facilitates the meetings
using the nationally-recognized MELD curriculum. The
support groups will assist adolescent mothers and
their partners with proper parenting techniques, discipline
strategies, child development information, parent
development and how to use community resources.
Summer
Programs
During
the summer, Project M.A.S. sponsors activities and
presentations on topics such as nutrition, physical
exercise, women's health issues, employment opportunities,
infant massage and campus tours to local colleges
and universities. These activities provide students
with the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills
to develop a positive, meaningful and satisfying life.
Transportation, snacks and childcare are provided.
Partners are welcomed to attend!
Program
Philosophy
Our
program philosophy stems from the idea that:
We
compose our own dreams.
Each is unique. It belongs entirely to the dreamer.
Don't be afraid of the space between your dreams and
reality.
If you can dream it, you can make it so.
- Belva Davis
